Things you need to do
before your dog or cat is lost
Hopefully, your dog or cat will never be lost.
But accidents happen |
someone leaves a door or gate open
and that may be all it takes.
The normal reaction is panic |
unless youfve made a gjust in caseh plan in advance.
There are a number of things you can do ahead of time
so if your pet is lost, youfre prepared to spring into action.
MICROCHIP
Get your pet microchipped. A microchip is a tiny chip, about the size of a piece of rice, that contains a number. The chip is injected, using a syringe, between the animalfs shoulder blades. The chipfs number, along with the animalfs description and the ownerfs contact information, is registered with the microchip company. The chip, which stays in the animalfs body, cannot fall off or get lost. Best of all, almost every animal shelter and veterinarianfs office has a scanner that can greadh the chip. If your dog or cat is lost and winds up at a shelter or vetfs office, the information on the chip will ensure that you will be notified.

PHOTO
Take pictures of your pet. If your dog or cat is ever lost, youfll need a good picture to put on flyers and posters. Make sure the photo is clear, and make copies in black & white as well as color. If you ever need to make lots of copies, black & white is much less expensive, and youfll want to know in advance that your photo clearly shows any markings that would help in identification. Make sure you keep your photos up to date. Puppy and kitten pictures may not show how your older animal looks now.
CONTACT LIST
Get out your phone book and make a list of nearby shelters and veterinarians, with phone numbers and addresses. If your pet is ever lost, these are the places youfll be visiting with your flyers.
ID TAG
Invest in an identification tag, including your current phone number, and attach it to your petfs collar. (Cats should only wear gbreak awayh collars for safety.) Then put the collar on your pet and keep it on.
